A touch of sun

Driving through the city, I discover the sun has finally risen high enough to let its light fall mildly into narrow streets and touch the walls of the houses all the way to the ground. The shadows of the naked trees draw cracks on the humorless grey, seems to break them up as the thaw breaks up the ice on the canal. Suddenly they appear loose, playfully permeable. The corsets the winter put on the city and its inhabitants crumble. We blink, stand more upright, look about us, marveling.
